The Trial PROJECT
The trial project is the final humanities project of my 9th grade year. This project consecutivley lasted about 1-2 months. The basis of this project was to have a trial arguing immigration. There were 4 different groups with different beliefs. TEAM A : The border needs to be strictly enforced. TEAM B : Amnesty needs to be given to illegal immigrants. TEAM C : Temporary worker visa. TEAM D : The system is fine the way it is. I was on Team A. In the end it was Team B who won the trial.
Project Reflection!
The purpose of this project was to, learn how to debate by putting on a mock trail. Debating the topic of immigration in the U.S.A.
Somethings that went well?
Well: My group came in second place for the whole trial.
Well: We we "Destroyed" the other witness's arguments. (Except for like 2 people on team B)
Well: The work was relatively self explanatory
Well: We had a lot of time to complete and research things.
What would I have done differently?
Chosen to be a lawyer, I feel that I did my job as a witness and of my lawyer.
I should have given my group more cross examination questions sooner (We quite possible could have won).
Taken pictures, all the pictures on this DP for the trial project were taken by the teacher.
Deliverables!

First off my witness statement. A witness statement is a statement provided by the witness during a trial. It contains all the facts the witness will bring up.

Witness Statement
My name is Gordon Freeman, and I live in arizona. I am a U.S economist, and my job entails that I study about the U.S economy. It also entails that I have knowledge of undocumented citizens effect on the U.S economy. Personally I believe that illegal immigration causes more economical problems than it solves, if any. I as well believe that our current immigration system is not what it should be, I believe that we should strictly enforce our rules. To solve these economic problems.
The U.S suffers economically from illegal immigration every year. “Illegal immigration costs U.S. taxpayers about $113 billion a year at the federal, state and local level. The annual outlay that illegal aliens cost U.S. taxpayers is an average amount per native-headed household of $1,117. Education for the children of illegal aliens constitutes the single largest cost to taxpayers, at an annual price tag of nearly $52 billion.”
(Davidson, 2006).
Money is flowing out of the country and being sent to mexico by illegal immigrants on a yearly basis, While it should be kept in the U.S to support the economy. $60 billion dollars are earned by illegal aliens in the U.S. each year. One of Mexico's largest revenue streams (after exports and oil sales) consists of money sent home by legal immigrants and illegal aliens working in the U.S. (Davidson, 2006)
Another major problem are temporary workers, the way our country works is that the upper class people support lower class people by paying taxes. Most of this “Support” is in the form of health care, education. Not to mention giving the temporary workers visa. U.S citizens tax dollars are being put to use on people who shouldn't be in our country in the first place. Also as previously stated most of the money they earn of off being in the U.S gets sent back to Mexico, to families friends.
Educating illegal aliens another big loss of money to the U.S. For
K - 12 education the U.S has spent $40,883,000,000 which is honestly ridiculous. (Martin, 2010)
My belief is that we are as a nation are losing too much money letting these illegal immigrants stay and work in our country, we have rules and they should be enforced.

Finally my Q and A. The Q and A is where the witness (Me!) states their facts to the court. Questions are asked by the lawyer.
1) Please State your full name to the court
Gordon Freeman
2) Hello. Would you please remind us of what you do as a U.S. economist?
As an economist I study and record the state of the U.S economy.
3) How does illegal immigration affect the U.S. economy?
Well, about $60 billion dollars earned by undocumented citizens each year most of it is sent back to Mexico, making it one of Mexico's largest revenue streams. Most undocumented citizens do not pay income tax or property tax due to the fact that they are undocumented, therefore causing us to lose approximately 15k dollars in taxes.
4) Is the economy affected by temporary workers?
Yes. The way our country works is that the upper class people support lower class people by paying taxes. Most of this “Support” is in the form of health care, education. Not to mention giving the temporary workers visa. U.S citizens tax dollars are being put to use on people who are not staying permanently in our country, and shouldn't be in our country in the first place.
5) What is the annual outlay that undocumented citizens cost U.S taxpayers per household?
Native household pay an average outlay of about 1k (1,117) annually, among about 110 million households (105,480,101) making that a total of about 110 billion dollars (117,821,272,817) annually.
6) How much money has been spent by the U.S on educating undocumented students K - 12?
The U.S taxpayers have spent about $40.9 dollars on education for undocumented students.
7) Is it also true that we have to provide medical care to the undocumented citizens?
Yes it is true, in one year, Los Angeles County by itself had a cost of $350 million becaue of illegal immigrants. It is estimated that a few hospitals and 16 health clinics could have been saved if this money was available. This furthermore takes more American Jobs.
Also because I did not attend the border field trip, I had to write an essay. Here it is!

Border Angels
The Border angels a non-profit organization started in 1986 by an man name Enrique Morones a U.S born citizen but he has family in mexico. This is why he feels a strong connection to the people of Mexico. His company the Border angels is a volunteer non-profit company that lends humanitarian assistance to those crossing the border illegally in the san diego desert and surrounding areas. Do I believe what they do is right? I believe that the humanitarian aspect of what they do is great, saving lives is always good no matter what situation its in. Although I do not agree with the indirect encouragement of illegal immigration even though they do it indirectly it is still there. Glenn beck stated “There is a war on our border.” I completely agree, the U.S has lost a total of 113 border patrol agents due to illegal immigration. They lost their lives defending the borders of the United states. Immigration is supposed to be a peaceful thing and I personally believe that all the effort put in to cross illegally could be put in to immigrate legally.
Illegal immigration causes many economical problems. “Illegal immigration costs U.S. taxpayers about $113 billion a year at the federal, state and local level.” $113 dollars that could be saved is being used on illegal immigrants, people who aren't even citizens of the U.S. “The annual outlay that illegal aliens cost U.S. taxpayers is an average amount per native-headed household of $1,117.” Money that U.S citizens could be using for themselves is being taken and put into illegal immigrants people who have not taken their time and or money to immigrate legally. “The annual gross cost to U.S. taxpayers to provide schooling, hospitalization, and whatever plethoric benefits are out there for the 30 million illegal aliens is approximately $400 billion per year funded by bona fide U.S. taxpayers. That's $400 billion per year and going up." The U.S is required to help and protect all people, this including illegal immigrants who seek shelter in the U.S. $400 billion dollars a year for hospitalization and schooling (two main factors). My personal belief is that the $400 billion dollars should be only used for the essentials like hospitals and schooling but after the illegal immigrants graduate school the U.S should require them to become citizens. Because of the schooling they received they should be able to get a steady job / career. To pay for the legalization process. “Dozens of hospitals in Texas, New Mexico Arizona, and California, have been forced to close or face bankruptcy because of federally-mandated programs requiring free emergency room services to illegal aliens.” This I feel is really sad because these illegal aliens are the reason some of these hospitals closed, and now the legal people in these communities may have to drive farther to get emergency care or have to get a new doctor for their children all because some illegal immigrants are excused from paying for emergency care.
Illegal immigration causes many environmental problems in the U.S. “The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) estimates that illegal aliens dumped more than 25 million pounds of trash in the Arizona desert between 1999 and 2005—that is almost 2,100 tons of trash each year.” Trash that is brought from Mexico to the U.S, basically making it the U.S’s problem thus making the U.S clean 2,100 tons of trash a year that isn't even theirs. This also means they have to spend money to pay the workers to clean it up so the U.S is also losing money for trash that isn't even theirs. In addition to leaving trash illegal immigrants also are a cause of wildfires. “In 2002 in southern Arizona, illegal aliens were suspected of having caused at least eight major wildfires that burned 68,413 acres.” With the recent wildfires in 2014 we all know how severe this can be homes burned, people lives ruined, people KILLED. And I thought people being killed were what the border angels were trying to avoid. While even indirectly they are encouraging illegal immigration and at the same time causing loss of life and loss of property to U.S citizens. “In May of 2007, illegal aliens set at least five fires in the Coronado National Forest over a 10-day period in an effort to burn out Border Patrol agents conducting a law enforcement operation in the area.” Illegal immigrants were trying to “Burnout Border Patrol agents” by starting wildfires in a national forest. The immigrants who started these fires probably did not care if there was loss of life or property at all they just want a steady job and a home in the U.S and will / would do anything to get such job or home. Not to mention they tried to burnout a NATIONAL forest which is a federal offense or in their case an attack on the U.S.A which I don’t think would sit well with the Mexican government.
Illegal immigrants take jobs from american citizens. In California alone 1,887,695 jobs have been taken by illegal immigrants, jobs that could have been there for U.S citizens and most of the money received by the illegal immigrants by doing those jobs will most likely get sent back to Mexico completely useless to the U.S. I believe that U.S citizens should have the right of way for jobs in the United states as they are U.S citizens. “In the first quarter of 2013, the number of working-age natives (16 to 65) working was 1.3 million fewer than in the first quarter of 2000, while the number of immigrants working was 5.3 million greater over the same period.” Basically this is stating that the number of illegal immigrant workers keeps growing quite exponentially on a yearly basis.
Those are just some things that the border angels cause indirectly. The border angels are not all bad thought. They do great humanitarian things. The border angles help save lives to those who need it the most such and dehydrated / starving people trying to cross the border illegally. Even though these people are illegal they are still people and deserve to live, in no way am I stating or suggesting they should die. I am simply stating that all the effort put into crossing the border illegally could be put in to cross the border legally. And i'm sure both the mexican government and the U.S government would not mind to reach a consensus on illegal immigration. Overall I support the humanitarian efforts to save lives but on the other hand I don't approve of the indirect encouragement of illegal immigration.

It was interesting, the topic was boring, but learning how law works was interesting. I learned that in a courthouse they take their procedures and rules very seriously. I intend to use a lot of logic during the trail, I found that during the mock trial logic dictated the winner more or less. I plan on logically looking at a question and answering it in a way that it sounds good for my cause.
