Changemakers project
The change makers project was a project where we as students were tasked with going out into the real world and attempting to make a difference somehow for someone. Each group had four members and was tasked with finding a topic that they're passionate about and do a project for an organization based around that topic. My group chose veterans and partnered with the American Legion to create a documentary about veterans, we had to do lots of research based around out topic including writing an entire research paper which you can find linked at the bottom of this page. Overall I had an interesting experience and learned a great deal about what kind of planning we should do.
The organization my group partnered with for the change makers project was the American Legion, because my groups focus was on veterans this organization seemed like the best fit. The American Legion supports veterans by giving them a sense of community and helping them as a sort of "liaison." They will help get veterans connected to the VA and other things of that nature. The American legion also has a global presence assisting active duty and veterans worldwide.
For the change makers project we were tasked with creating a project with a purpose for a certain audience, doing veterans my group at first was generally stumped when it came to doing something. Eventually we came up with the idea to create a short film documenting what veterans go through and some of their stories in general. So as a group we went to interview veterans during an American Legion meeting and got about one hour and thirty minutes of footage with this footage we decided that it would be accessible to all audiences and would be a "documentary" sort that could educate people on what veterans go through ETC.
During this project I learned most about creating a documentary and things of this nature. This means that I generally underestimated how "easy" it would be to create the documentary, naturally I assumed that we would have shots of different angles and would have some stock footage to put into the video to split it up a little bit. The lack of stock footage is my fault completely as I should have known what to record when I was there, and I didn't this hurt the video drastically and I take responsibility for it. The other problem is the fact that we only had one shot the whole time of recording meaning that there was no diversity or attention grabbing material during the video, the reason for this is because when the footage was recorded we only had sent one group member to record, thus sending one camera. This was a MAJOR problem, and generally a terrible idea what we should have done is speak with our teacher about getting an extension so that we could set a meeting date where all the group could attend and record multiple angels and styles so that we could make a really well thought out attention grabbing documentary. This is basically what I learned, over plan instead of under plan, and when you think your done planning, plan some more.
